The Calvin Universe

July 15th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

The labels may be different, but there is a spirt that unites the many lines of the Calvin Klein empire. During campaign season the mega-brand always manages to create a stir and for fall they unveil five new campaigns, distinctive yet unmistakably Calvin. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Art Partner) shoot Calvin Klein Jeans & Underwear enlisting Lara Stone and Matthew Terry to provide the prerequisite sex appeal. The #mycalvins hashtag is emblazoned across Mert & Marcus’ beautiful black and white portraits of the duo and is sure to resonate with the social media obsessed.

For Calvin Klein Collection and Platinum advertising David Sims shoots serene images of CK favorites Vanessa Axente and Clark Bockelman sporting the memorable F/W collections with stylish flair. The collection ads with their striking mountainside backdrop provide an especially beautiful showcase for Sims’ minimal style.

Last but certainly not least, familiar faces Edita Vilkeviciute and Tyson Ballou make a perfect couple in the pared down ads for White Label. Sporting coordinating tweeds and knits and looking cooler than thou in Daniel Jackson‘s shots the duo are ideal Calvin representatives conveying exactly the right amount of urban chic.

Skin Deep

June 19th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Who says beige has to be boring? Amy Troost and Alastair McKimm create a compelling story for Vogue China that showcases the best of the season’s taupe, tan and textured wares. Juliane Grüner looks elegant in on-trend pieces from Calvin KleinBelstaff, Jean Paul Gaultier and Céline. The second skin concept comes to life with via a few well placed exotic materials and a series of covetable leather jackets. The Biz : The Week That Was

April 26th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

GALLIANO + PARSONS

galliano
John Galliano and Eva Green by Ellen von Unwerth

Who better to teach young designers about the ups and downs of the business than a true fashion veteran, former Dior creative director John Galliano is set to teach a Master Class at Parsons . The series, cheekily entitled ‘Show Me Emotion’ “seeks to engage its participants by provoking the power of emotion in context of fashion practice and exploration of intuitive, perceptive manners of investigational making.” Sounds like a fascinating opportunity for the students lucky enough to gain entrance. / LUCKY

PUNK STORIES

Cara Delevingne in Quentin Jones (Cadence New York)’s short film for Punk Stories

In the weeks leading up to the Met Gala Vogue and punk are becoming increasingly interwined. Case in point, the magazine’s newly launched ‘Punk Stories’ film series. Enlisting a new female director each week to create a cutting-edge fashion film centered on the theme of punk the films provide a sophisticated and luxurious take on the DIY down and dirty ethos of punk. Already they’ve had Cara Delevingne rocking out in a kinetic film by Quentin Jones (Cadence New York) that capitalizes on Cara’s larger than life personality and the rock n’roll spirit of punk’s evolution. The week prior Dree Hemingway mixed punk with New Wave glam in Mary Nighy’s soulful short.

NO ANGEL

Victoria’s Secret lashes back at former contest winner, Kylie Bisutti whose interviews regarding her forthcoming book have sent shockwaves through the blog-o-sphere. In an official statement the mega-brand denied Ms. Bisutti had ever been in the running for Angel status and said the following:

“Ms. Bisutti has made numerous fabrications and misstatements of fact regarding her brief association with Victoria’s Secret. In 2009, Ms. Bisutti won an online amateur modeling competition and hasn’t worked for us since that year. The prize for the winning contestant was the unique opportunity to a one-time walk in the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Ms. Bisutti also participated in a swim photo shoot in 2009. That was the extent of Ms. Bisutti’s involvement with Victoria’s Secret. She was never a Victoria’s Secret “Angel” as defined by the terms of our Angel model contract. And contrary to Ms. Bisutti’s claims, she was never offered any subsequent modeling contracts or opportunities with Victoria’s Secret despite her multiple appeals for further work. She has repeatedly fabricated her work experience with Victoria’s Secret – including a relationship that simply did not exist.

Falling 4 Pre-Fall

December 6th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Pre-fall is in full swing and the season between seasons is providing us with plenty of eye-candy this time around. Take a look at some of our favorites so far and be sure to let us know what you’re loving in the comments.

HELMUT LANG

Model: Kel Markey / Images Courtesy Helmut Lang

Neutrals – particularly dramatic black and white – are the bread and butter of the new incarnation of Helmut Lang. Don’t let last season’s foray into bold color fool you, designers Michael and Nicole Colovos have always had a special place in their heart for a restrained color palette. The duo also loves a sharply cut leather jacket and a well applied use of ombre, so their pre-fall look was just one hit after another.

Calvin Klein Collection
Models: Magdalena Jasek, Sara Blomqvist, Katya Ryabinkina

Naturally designer Francisco Costa gave Calvin loyalists minimalism, but the brand’s pre-fall looks had an autumnal twist. Described as ‘essential classics’ Costa’s pieces were appealing reinventions of pieces every woman ought to have in her wardrobe; the perfect camel coat, the figure hugging shift, even a few pared down dresses that can go from day into evening.

GIVENCHY
Model: Ricardo Figueiredo

Givenchy always keeps us on our toes and their pre-fall offerings are no exception; leather shorts, deconstructed argyle sweaters, blazers emblazoned with the word pervert – everything is just a little off-kilter, but that keeps things exciting. Like many designers do during this season, Riccardo Tisci looked to the idea of essentials and took some of his bestselling pieces into fresh territory. Just when you think you’ve tired of those ubiquitous doberman t-shirts, Tisci gives you a remixed version of the statement look done in a digitized print.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM
Model: Valery Kaufman / Images Courtesy Phillip Lim

Easily the most sophisticated take on the biker lore that we’ve seen in ages. Fashionphiles are sure to see some Balenciaga parallels in this collection, but adapting high fashion ideas for contemporary set is part of Lim’s formula. Lim played with embellishment, adding in crystals, embroidery and loads of layering for added interest. As always accessories are on point, with a sporty brand new backpack serving as the standout piece.
