A Witty Vision

Carbon Copy, the cheeky little brother of the unconventional British menswear magazine Client, celebrates its fourth birthday this year, and the latest issue shows some signs of growing up. The nineteenth edition, out this week, comes with a choice of five striking covers, featuring industry favorites Baptiste Radufe, Charlie France, Demy Matzen, and Matvey Lykov along with new face Rhys Pickering, all photographed by Misha Taylor dressed in smooth suiting by Marc Piña. Carbon Copy moves further away from the clean black-and-white purity of Client, with youthful, colorful stories and a new high-grade printing process. The issue demonstrates a witty vision and playful aesthetic, contrasting an evocatively washed-out feature of summer brights with classically elegant portraiture in the main feature “Body Language,” which comes with a sleek accompanying film. Editor-in-chief Ian Cole offers up a faded study of streetwise youth, the final word on an issue packed with the new. There is plenty of variety on offer, but the through line remains, as always, an emphasis on classic imagery, tinted, here, with the brightest shades of young energy.

Winter to Spring

The cover of the latest issue of DSection may be a study in winter white, but the pages inside make it clear that spring is well on its way. Arthur Gosse and Baptiste Radufe, dressed by Jimi Urquiga in Thom Browne’s Versailles-inspired designs, are photographed by Jack Waterlot for the accompanying story lounging in a snowbound cabin, but the floral prints and bright sportswear found throughout the rest of the menswear magazine offer a welcome prelude to the thaw. Alexi Lubomirski shoots the iconic Daria Werbowy on a secluded patch of welcoming sand, while Nicolas Valois captures new face Daniel van der Deen looking steamy in Dries Van Noten’s rich palm tree-print shirt. Many of today’s biggest faces make appearances as well, from Anders Hayward and Marc Sebastian Faiella to Alexandre Cunha and Ton Heukels, all with that certain elegance expected from DSection.

Boo George (Streeters) tackles the sartorial allure of the west in the latest Numero Homme, enlisting Anna de Rijk, Baptiste Radufe & Rob Moore to star in an atmospheric set of images. Wearing bolo ties, voluminous suits and world weary looks, the trio embody an urbane vision of cowboy style as imaged by Caroline Newell. The black and white shots are emotive and starkly beautiful, while the color images strike a dreamy chord.

Spring/Summer 2012 has proved to be a great run for a string of first timers for their respective houses; many of them also choosing new faces to front their campaigns for the season. How do you think these guys have fared?

While usually having a bevy of models in their ads, Gucci went solo this season with new and fresh faced Greg Nawrat. It also seems that Bottega Veneta had the same idea and tapped spring show opener Alex Cunha to star in their campaign, shot by contemporary artist Jack Pierson.

Running champs of the campaign season again, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott explored two different sides with Giorgio Armani and Versace. Simon Nessman solidifies his place on our list in a sleek and simple setting while relatively unknown British face Ryan Barrett snags an only guy campaign beside the illustrious Gisele.

On the opposite side of Salvatore Ferragamo, new faces Simone Nobili and Chris Moore hold their own in Givenchy‘s dark and moody spring ads by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.
