First Look : Mixte

January 30th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

With it’s original take on the latest trends and arresting editorial content, Mixte has always been a publication worth picking up for a dose of fashion inspiration. The latest issue is no exception and you can tell right from the slightly off-kilter cover of Ava Smith by Johan Sandberg that you’re in for a lively visual experience that takes things in interesting directions. Sporting a choppy black bowl cut and fittingly unique  makeup, Ava looks gamine and the images styled by Joanna Schlenzka (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists) focus on the season’s graphic fixation. By playing with print and perspective, while reflecting the off the runway patterns, the story creates an artistic riff on the current taste for all things squares and stripes.

Resort Hits

June 8th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Another season, another set of wearable designs for resort, even if you aren’t headed to your summer house for a seasonal stopover you’re sure to find something you like. Here’s what we’ve been loving from Resort so far – be sure to tell us your favorites in the comments!

BALENCIAGA
Pictured on Liya Kebede, Marte Mei van Haaster & Meghan Collison

Ballet inspired minimalism, that offers a welcome respite from the 80s infused disco vibe that Ghesquière has been giving us lately. A simple, elegant and dare we say it – pretty, collection that feels new. Plus, it goes without saying that those slate & coral heels are set to become an editorial (and street style) sensation.

GUCCI
Pictured on Bette Franke, Karmen Pedaru & Nadja Bender

The Gucci flora print is iconic and Frida has always found interesting ways of incorporating it into her designs. The Resort collection offers a colorful and feminine take on the Gucci standards and even boasts a little restraint – there is only one pastel suit!

DEREK LAM
Pictured on Monika Sawicka & Ava Smith

We admit that we don’t quite see the Coming to America inspiration, but we’re happy that Derek Lam looked to a film that hasn’t been run into the ground for inspiration. All we see is clean, classic American design with a modern twist and really we can’t complain about that.

Editorial Inspiration: Rene Gruau

May 17th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

As one of the foremost fashion illustrators of all time, René Gruau made a lasting impact on the fashion industry. His work for designers like Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Pierre Balmain and Hubert de Givenchy, elevated their legendary designs into the realm of art and helped to change the way women dressed. Dazed & Confused pays tribute to Gruau’s style with a futuristic story by Daniel Jackson, styled by Karen Langley. With eye-catching black and white makeup by Yadim mimicking Gruau’s bold brushstrokes on the faces of Ava Smith, Codie Young &Madison Headrick, the edit is a modernized look at the master’s signature style.

This editorial also marks Yadim’s very first as the new International Makeup Designer for Dior, Naturally he was inspired by Gruau’s drawings for the house and he developed the concept based on those images.
