The Feminine Mystique

February 18th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

There is something about the way Mario Sorrenti creates a picture that just brings out the best in his subjects. In the latest issue of W, Sorrenti takes 18 of the most beautiful models and shoots them looking seductive and sensual: some of the pictures work better than others but he manages to capture the essence of each girl.

Variety Show

January 22nd, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Sometimes inspired casting can make a story, case in point Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadins latest editorial in Vogue Paris. The mammoth story is half studio shoot / half travelogue and features a host of talented models; the Morocco shots are all about Freja, Lara & Dree, but the indoor photos have Vogue Paris familiars Isabeli Fontana, Raquel Zimmermann and Naomi Campbell working those dynamic poses. Newcomers Anna de Rijk and Martin Cohn also make strong showings within the story and there is even a special appearance by comeback kids Talisa Soto and Tanga Moreau.

Bits & Bytes: Hail to McQueen

October 7th, 2009 |Posted by Betty

As important as it is to be able to “wear” fashion, there must be that side to it that thrills us. Alexander Mcqueen certainly did that with his S/S 10 collection. From Lady Gaga twittering to the live streaming by Nick Knight’s Showstudio (for video, click here), people certainly love them some McQueen. Besides his wondrous collection though, as Sarah Mower from says: “the way he’s embracing new computer technologies and the drama of the moving image puts him at the leading edge of change.”

Check out Jezebel’s uber witty, yet still reverent notes about Alexander McQueen’s collection.

New face Alend from Next Company in Vienna is very old school male supermodel.

We like new faces Selena Petrovic and Sylwia.

Anna Dello Russo, up close and personal, is pretty damn fabulous.

Dutch Masters

September 29th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Modeling moves in cycles and every few seasons it seems as though there is another set of great girls hailing from a new place. This season is all about stunning Dutch girls and it is easy to see why. Who better to embody the classicism and straightforward prettiness that defines the current look than the beauties of the Netherlands? As established Dutch models like Lara Stone and Ymre Stiekema lead the pack a host of new faces have been steadily gaining prominence these past few seasons, here is a crash course in the Dutch faces to watch.

Patricia van der Vliet : With a Prada exclusive and a super selective New York season under her belt, Patricia is definitely a face to watch for Paris. Wouldn’t her perfect proportions and cool beauty look just right at Lanvin or YSL?

Mirte Maas : The stunning Mirte has a slot on the Top 10 Newcomers list and has made appearances at Prada, Calvin Klein and every other runway worth talking about. Add in the early editorial buzz and you’ve got a superstar in the making.

Bregje Heinen : As one of the MVPs of Milan, Bregje is poised to repeat her success in Paris. Though she’s got enviable proportions and a walk that just wont quit, special attention must be payed to that undeniably beautiful face. Pillow lips, an icy blue stare and the kind of sensuality that makes beauty contract dreams come true.

Nicola Haffmans : With her distinctive feline look and womanly allure, Nicola was among the stars of London Fashion week. Luella, Christopher Kane, Pringle – if there was a hip London runway she was on it. The sleek edge that blew London away will definitely impress Paris.

Lisanne de Jong : Alexander Wang enthusiast and Prada exclusive, Lisanne is a former Model of the Week. Her natural beauty and engaging personality make her stand out from the pack of lanky blondes. Paris should provide nothing but excitement as we can easily envision Lisanne on the most directional runways.

Nimue Smit : Though she’s only been in the game for a few seasons the enchanting Nimue is already a star in her own right. Prada campaign? Check. Vogue Italia? Check. Another flawless season? Naturally.

Anna de Rijk : Anna has been on a roll since her Prada exclusive last season. With strong editorial work and impeccable seasons in each and every market there is really no stopping this regal classic beauty.

Nicole Hofman : Quality is better than quantity, with a debut at Burberry that set tongues wagging Nicole Hofman placed herself on the fast track for success. After showing up at Prada looking lovely this very fresh face is all but gauranteed to have an interesting Paris season. Expect to see her on only the most exclusive runways.

Burberry’s Beat

September 24th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Frothy pastels and lighter than air fabrics aside, the freshest thing at Burberry this season was the stunning cast. Handpicked by Barbara Nicoli, the young and energetic lineup featured a slew of faces so fresh that there were even a few we hadn’t seen before. Fashion thrives on newness but the great thing about this lineup was how well it represented the house’s ideals. The 25th Anniversary of London fashion week was the perfect time to reinforce all that Burberry stands for – youth, British eccentricity, tradition and just a touch of rock and roll ease to make it all palatable.

Amazing faces at Burberry: Gracie Carvalho, Julia Hafstrom, Barbara Dvorakova, Madisyn Ritland, Nicole Hofman, Taylor Kraemer, Tatiana Cortilar & Dorothea Barth Jorgensen.Top pic: Ranya Mordanova, Chanel Iman

The multi-ethnic cast of beauties was completely in line with the diversity and vitality of London and best of all everyone looked smashing in Christopher Bailey’s collection. How lovely was rising star Taylor Kraemer look in her signature trench? Were you Googling to find out just who the mystery brunette beauty was -  Nicole Hofman is her name for those who were searching. Among the other pleasant surprises were appearances by Gracie Carvalho and an opening slot filled by Anna de Rijk.

The Dark Night

September 8th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

There is a darkness than underlies the drama of Paolo Roversi‘s latest story for Vogue Italia. Ymre Stiekema, Anna de Rijk, Heidi Mount, Toni Garrn, Rose Cordero, Viktoriya Sosonkina, Jourdan Dunn, Darya Kurovska, Imogen Morris-Clarke, Sigrid Agren and Constance Jablonski star in a series of images that are both fantastical and romantic. The luminous beauty of the finest couture pieces is juxtaposed against a dimly lit garden background and a cluttered pile of chairs but somehow it all comes together perfectly. The pictures are haunting and standout as an especially memorable spin on the couture editorial.

Dark Water

July 8th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Prada is always a campaign to watch each season and not just to see what engaging concept Steven Meisel comes up with next. The girls chosen for Prada have a habit of becoming sensations, which makes this season’s selections all the more intriguing. Kendra Spears, Julia Hafstrom and Anna de Rijk join Prada’s signature face Ymre Stiekema for an eerie image that combines cinematic mystery with Prada’s special breed of luxury.
