Optical Illusions

Acne Paper is a source of consistently cutting edge content and their latest issue delivers the goods. Miguel Reveriego’s super sleek black and white portraits of Bridget Hall, Camille Mervin LeroyHannah Holman and Alla Kostromichova are striking in their use of light and shadow. The combination of unusual lighting and Marie Chaix’s eclectic styling makes for a few impressive visual tricks - note the faux baby bump on Bridget.

Double Edged

November 2nd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Two sides of Alla Kostromichova are on display in Numero. The versatile Ukrainian beauty poses for the always imaginative Sebastian Kim and the results are lovely. The color images feature Alla looking very Grace Coddington with a wild red mane and funky ensembles while the black and white pictures feature a sleek blonde Alla. Naturally both versions are completely gorgeous but we can’t help but feel a little favoritism towards the flame red tresses. Which version of Alla do you love?

Sweet Charity

October 27th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Nothing brings a great cause to light like an imaginative ad that captures the heart of an issue with intelligence and wit. Of course, a few of the world’s most beautiful models stripping down to their skivvies certainly doesn’t hurt either. Cameron Russell, Rianne Ten Haken, Rachel Alexander, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Crystal Renn, Shannan Click, Olya Ivanisevic, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Alla Kostromichova, Nicole Trunfio and Heidi Mount join forces to bring awareness to 350.org and the International Day of Climate Awareness via a humorous spot that has the girls peeling off layers due to the heat caused by the rising carbon count. The ad conceived by Cameron herself, is a smart and sexy way to get attention for a great cause. MDC spoke to the always eloquent Cameron for a little insight into why this cause is so important and how the project itself got off the ground.

MDC: There are so many great people involved in this video - how did you organize such a project?

Cameron: All the girls are my friends and loved shooting the video for a good cause, so that part was relatively easy to pull together.

The whole project happened from start to finish in a little under two weeks and 300 phone calls–who knew production was so complicated!

MDC: On a personal level what made you want to get involved with this cause?

Cameron: I think Climate Change is the most important issue of our time. In the history of the world all 5 mass extinctions have been accompanied by massive climate change, so we are facing an incredible serious threat.  In fact we are technically in the 6th mass extinction right now, and it is the first mass extinction being attributed to human kind. My all time hero Tibor Kalman showed the world the ability of mass media to convey serious images and create real discussion (think 90’s Benneton ad’s of people with AIDS). Climate Change which is often seen as very political or scientific needs to be made a people’s issue. My hope is that this ad helps re-brand environmentalism.

Gaga for Givenchy

October 6th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Givenchy S/S 2010

Givenchy has become the Paris show to watch when it comes to eclectic casting. With its mix of re-discovered  favorites, fresh faces and house staples there was truly something for everyone. Whether you’re a 90s model fan enjoying the welcome shock of seeing both Michele Hicks and Kirsty Hume on the runway again or new faces watcher charting the course of fast rising star Antonella Graef there was excitement to be found. Riccardo Tisci’s graphic black and white collection shone on each and every model selected but there were a few girls in particular that grabbed our attention.

Antonella Graef

Antonella opens Givenchy

While Antonella Graef  (Top S/S 10 Newcomer) snagged the bulk of our attention with her second time opening Givenchy (she opened couture too) there were almost too many cool girls to count. Mirte MaasAlla Kostromichova and Jacquelyn Jablonski continue to book only the best shows and top 10 newcomer Frida Gustavsson’s winning streak extended into Paris. Exclusives like the Elena Ivanova (WM Paris) and Nastya Karzan provided welcome surprises and Tisci favorites like Lily Donaldson, Iselin Steiro, Lakshmi Menon and Meghan Collison all made appearances - important to note given just how many established girls spent their S/S seasons away from the catwalk.

Girls of Givenchy

Gwen Loos (Marilyn). Emily DiDonato. Jacquelyn Jablonski.

One of the most continuously interesting things about Givenchy’s casting is that each season it manages to change our view of certain girls. Take Maybelline face Emily DiDonato for example. Pre-Givenchy and she’s the the definition of wholesome, All-American sexiness (witness OTM’s video interview with her)-  a little eyebrow bleach and matte lipstick later and she’s one of Tisci androgynously beautiful heroines. Same goes for Italian bombshell Bianca Balti and the sultry Elena Melnick. The way every girl transforms once they enter into Tisci’s world is really what makes this show as powerful as it is season after season.

Cast & Crew

September 21st, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

What is the best way to spice up a plain ol’ fashioned studio shoot? The answer boils down to three words - casting, casting, casting. Take a look at Jason Kibbler’s latest Vogue China editorial for a taste of what young blood can do to enliven a familiar concept. Madisyn Ritland, Bara Holotova and Shu Pei bring their A-game to the table and enliven what would ordinarily be just another white backdrop shoot. Take a look at the glare in Miss Ritland’s eyes in that final shot - that’s what its all about.

Alla Rising

August 24th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Alla Kostromichova is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. The leggy Ukrainian beauty is making the rounds of September’s big issues with a slot on the cover of 10 and a sultry editorial by Craig McDean in the latest Interview.  While the ‘return of the sexy model’ might sound like lip service, the continued popularity of slinky stunners like Alla gives us hope, nothing like a powerful woman to make everyone sit up and pay attention.

Pagan Poetry

August 20th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

There is nothing like a pleasant surprise to get the season started right. The September issue of V comes with a staggering special supplement that focuses on the cerebral beauties at Women & Supreme Management management. The lengthy portfolio by  Paul Rowland re-imagines 19 of the industry’s most captivating faces as pagans - complete with flowers, insects, slabs of serrated flesh and of course, blood. The end result is raw, hypnotic and about a thousand times more interesting than most of the covers we’ve seen this September. Seeing Alana Zimmer, Alla Kostromichova, Behati Prinsloo, Christina Kruse, Daiane Conterato, Darya Kurovska, Georgina Stojiljkovic, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Hannelore Knuts, Iris Strubegger, Isabeli Fontana, Meghan Collison, Mina Cvetkovic, Natasa Vojnovic, Ranya Mordanova, Rose Cordero, Suvi Koponen, Valentina Zeliaeva and Yulia Kharlapanova in this new light highlights not only the versatility of the girls but also the sheer reserves of talent that can be found at these two powerhouse agencies.
