Better Than Brad? : 5 Chanel Campaign Alternatives

May 10th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Obvious fake ad is obviously fake

Like everyone else on earth when we heard the news that Hollywood star Brad Pitt was going to be fronting the latest Chanel No. 5 campaign we were surprised. While we like Pitt well enough, we’d rather see him headlining a blockbuster than waxing poetic about fragrance. Unless of course he’s wearing the Chanel No. 5 scent himself – that we’d like to hear about. Celebrities have a long history with Chanel No. 5, with everyone from Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet and Nicole Kidman fronting the campaign, but we’re of the mindset that no one does it better than a model.

Granted, we understand that a having a mega-popular superstar in an ad will probably get a brand more attention than they know what to do with and all publicity is good publicity, but we can’t help but ponder which models would have been just as good when it comes to posing. Here are 5 Karl approved alternative who could fill Brad’s shoes – just in case they decide to go in another direction next time…

THE OTHER BRADBrad Kroenig

Wouldn’t it be nice to see Karl’s favorite blonde Brad snatch up a high profile campaign like Chanel No. 5? It could be cute – imagine little Hudson sneaking into every picture!

THE MODEL TURNED MUSICIANBaptiste Giabiconi

Think of the accompanying campaign music video complete with Katy Perry cameo! Think of the general online outrage it would spark! Think of the gifs!

THE GIRLSSaskia de Brauw, Jac JagaciakCoco RochaFreja Beha ErichsenHeidi Mount - the list goes on!

Who says the new campaign has to be fronted by a guy? Forget the gimmicks and go with a group of models who have the star power, personality and presence to pull off anything. Saskia is already in Chanel’s latest ads, Jac Jagaciak is already the face of Chanel beauty and Coco is a perennial Lagerfeld fave who gets bonus points for tweeting her contention with the Pitt appointment. Feisty! We like it!

THE ACTRESSES – Mélanie Laurent, Mylène Jampanoï or Anna Mouglalis

If it absolutely has to be a celebrity, couldn’t the honor go to one of the gorgeous stars of French cinema? Sure Nicolas Ghesquiere has already got his claws in Charlotte Gainsbourg and Léa Seydoux is still representing Prada, but what of the superb, Mylène Jampanoï or Karl muse Anna Mouglalis? Granted, neither of them have the name recognition of Pitt, but what they lack in international attention they more than make up for in chic.

THE META MOVEKarl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld shot by Karl Lagerfeld dressed in Chanel designs by Karl Lagerfeld, with creative direction by Karl Lagerfeld and special thanks to Karl Lagerfeld. This could work.

All this said, we’re still curious about just what the Chanel / Pitt collaboration will look like. We secretly loved that ridiculous (and ridiculously beautiful) Nicole Kidman No. 5 short film.

Tao Okamoto by Russell James. Image courtesy of Tao

Naomi! Liu! Sean O! and more….Tao Okamoto’s Save Japan event is finally here. See items donated by the legendary Naomi Campbell, top models Jenny Shimizu, Heidi Mount, Liu Wen, Sean O’Pry and industry figures like François Nars, Cecilia Dean, Marie Chaix, Phillip Lim, Catherine Malandrino, Thakoon, Pamela Love and many more to raise money for the disaster in Japan. Though the location is called Saturday, the event is actually on Sunday, the 29th. Though we’re dying to see all the fashion items donated by such an eclectic and fabulous crowd, even better may be the chance to see some of these faces on Sunday pitching in for such a great cause. See you Sunday!

The awesome Sally Lyndley talks styling with Katie Grand on Fashionista. Also make sure you check out Katie’s new website, KatieGrand.com.

Carine Roitfeld, the “editrix/dominatrix” talks about her resemblance to Iggy Pop. Love it.

The Imagist has images of Ellen von Unwerth shot by the iconic Guy Bourdin, before she became a top photographer.

Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld‘s t-shirts are our favorites in the Uniqlo t-shirt benefiting the Japanese Red Cross, available next month. Which is yours?

We love Mcqueen as much as the next person but it’s still fascinating to read about his dark side.

Are you Twitter? You’re not? Maybe that’s better, says the NYTimes. Meanwhile the entire MDC crew is: @themoskovic, @hisssquad, @ninjasze, @sansartifice, @fsorrenti, @jonathanshia.

Campaigning

January 12th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Campaigns. We can’t get enough of the Spring ads. Unlike previous seasons where an overarching theme repeated through several campaigns, S/S 2011 is all about individuality; whether that means smart city chic ala DKNY’s clean ads featuring Heidi Mount and Kori Richardson, or all out fantasy as in the butterfly filled, Lindsey Wixson ads for Alexander McQueen. Some campaigns keep true to the spirit of the collection – Louis Vuitton’s chinoiserie motif repeats in the Steven Meisel helmed campaign, while others go in bold new directions. Armani’s refined collection is given a styling update in the ads by Nick Knight, the addition of a turban on Elisa Sednaoui gives the look more drama.

Even the simplest campaigns seem to have different moods this season; both Valentino and Calvin Klein go for black and white purity, but Valentino’s feminine David Sims shots of Caroline Brasch Nielsen, Julia Saner and Freja Beha Erichsen, are the exact opposite of CK’s austere Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott images of Lara Stone.

And The Nominees Are…

June 2nd, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

With the CFDA awards right around the corner, the tension is mounting. Who will win? Who will lose? What will they wear? The answers to all these questions will be revealed Monday night, but in the meantime the annual nominees portfolio only adds to the excitement. Shot by Solve Sundsbo and styled by Lori Goldstein, the images feature designers posing alongside models who represent the look of their brand; Jason Wu stands in awe of the statuesque Karlie Kloss, wearing one of his elegant fall creations, while Prabal Gurung lounges with Heidi Mount. Marc Jacobs may have missed the photoshoot but with a team of models led by Jacquelyn Jablonski and Paul Boche, wearing masks of the designer’s face you hardly notice his absence, Trey Laird‘s inventive creative direction, really makes these images shine.

Image Conscious

May 18th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

W gives us an early taste of fall with Craig McDean‘s chic portfolio of the season’s must have looks. Using a cast of IMG beauties and a simple peach backdrop, McDean highlights just about every piece we loved from the F/W collections. Once again Alex White‘s styling looks phenomenal and each girl wears an ensemble that speaks to her personality; could anyone look better in that stunning Haakan dress than Karolina, who better to show off Rodarte’s ethereal spirt than Liya? See the full portfolio and the models and designer’s take on each look at W Magazine.com
