mdc ♥s : Minimal Marvels

March 15th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Hedi Slimane‘s photos are minimalist marvels in and of themselves, especially this impeccable shot of Abbey Lee

No brand understands the relationship between form and function better than Calvin Klein and their latest fragrance is a testament to that. Calvin Klein Beauty, is an intoxicating Calla lily, jasmine and cedarwood blend that embodies pure sophistication. The feminine scent is an addictive addition to a fragrance lineup that already includes classics like Obsession and CK1 and the stunning, sculptural bottle designed by Wilhelm Linden creates the total sleek meets chic package.

Exploring the rise of the minimalist movement and its enduring influence on modern design Elyssa Dimant’s Minimalism and Fashion, is a must read for any appreciators pared down style. With a forward by Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa and look at designs from Rei Kawakubo, Helmut Lang, Madame Vionnet and many more the tome provides a comprehensive look at one of fashion’s major movements. Minimalist art and photography are also part of the dialogue, with memorable works from Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin and Donald Judd featured as well.

Reed Krakoff knows what his customer wants; Utility and elegance are hallmarks of his designs and that is why his eponymous line is a favorite of editors and urbane women alike. His latest carryall, The Gym Bag is a fresh take on the classic cabin bag and we’re loving it. While were pretty sure we aren’t going to see many carting these luxurious python and ostrich beauties down to Equinox, don’t be surprised if they show up on all the right streetstyle blogs.

Fancy a drink? Spotted during fashion week parties, U’Luvka Vodka has the most intriguingly designed bottles we’ve seen and the story behind the brand is just as good. Named after the legless crystal classes favored by King Sigismund III of Poland and his court (the glasses have no base so you can’t put them down until you’ve finished your drink) tradition dictates that the drink be consumed in friendship – preferably in a great martini.

Campaign Trail

January 3rd, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Who doesn’t love a good campaign? Spring ads keep coming in and this season’s take on brand imagery is looking quite nice. Tom Ford offers up a 70s inspired treat featuring Abbey Lee Kershaw wearing his signature oversized shades and pieces from his heavily hyped collection. Meanwhile, Roberto Cavalli gives us Laetitia Casta and Malgosia Bela looking stunning in scales and fringe; the Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott images are light and girly. Vera Wang’s vision for spring includes the radiant Shu Pei, whose unique beauty and poise in front of the camera work perfectly with Wang’s romantic aesthetic.

Kiss the Bride

December 17th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Is it love or lust? Abbey Lee Kershaw and Edita Vilkeviciute join forces for Mario Sorrenti‘s curiously steamy bridal editorial for Interview. Karl Templer provides the Vera Wang and lacy garters, but it is Abbey and Edita who give all the heat.

Grunge Redux

September 3rd, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Alexander Wang’s new campaign is an ode to the grungy feel of the mid 90s and with Karl Templer styling the look is certainly on point, but does Craig McDeans gritty campaign video do it for you? The sight of Abbey Lee Kershaw and piles of floating papers might not be aspirational for everyone, but it does manage to convey the downtown cool vibe Wang is known for. That’s our take, but tell us what you think in the comments.

Blondes on Blondes

September 2nd, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

POP magazine has a thing for blondes; from Britney Spears on the cover, to the their portfolio of handpicked golden haired ladies, this issue might as well be dedicated to solely to all things blonde. Speaking of that Angus Munro cast portfolio, Jamie Morgan shoots just about every blonde – bleached and otherwise, in this special editorial. Who do you think has the best shot in the story and which blonde beauties should have been a part of this editorial.

Mario Sorrenti goes above and beyond for Vogue Italia, with a sensual set of images starring Abbey Lee Kershaw. The shadowy look of the pictures coupled with Jane How‘s revealing styling makes for a subtly sexy take on fall’s sheer trend. The story also manages to present Abbey Lee in a different light, taking the free-spirited bohemian and transforming her into a polished sophisticate.

Sugar & Spice

Has Steven Meisel gone soft on us? The master photographer is showing his sugary side with in the new campaigns for Juicy Couture and Mulberry. The overdose of bright colors, youthful energy and over the top girlishness may have some missing Meisel’s darker moments, but the carefree shots of Hanne, Abbey, Eliza and Daria are perfectly atuned to the lighthearted feel of both brands.
