The Argentinian Wave

March 12th, 2010 Posted by Janelle comments (36)

Models come in waves – the Brazilians, the Russians, the Belgians – all legendary groups of girls who made an impact: based on F/W 2010′s castings, Argentinian models seem poised to take over. Argentine beauties like Flo Gennaro and Milagros Schmoll have been on the runways for years but in the past couple of seasons a new generation has risen to prominence, here is a who’s who of the Argentinian models who ruled F/W.

Dafne Cejas – Worldwide exclusive at Givenchy, not to mention a couture edit in Vogue Italia – the perfect way to kickstart a career.

Carla

Carla Gebhart – From Prada to YSL, Carla was at absolutely every blue chip show in Europe, no wonder she attained top 10 Newcomer status.

Tati

Tatiana Cotliar – After opening Marc Jacobs Tati became the season’s most in demand girl, her spitfire personality and impressive walk kept clients clamoring for more. Keep an eye out for her come campaign season!

Tetyana Melnychuk – As one of the stars of NY and London, Tetyana racked up mileage at shows like Rodarte,Y-3 and Proenza Shouler.

  2. Alexandre says:

not to mention Dafne who booked a worldwide exclusive with Givenchy.

I guess this marks the end of the Dutch takeover that has been taking hold of the fashion world for the past few seasons. :*-(

  3. anne says:

yes, and they’re all of either russian or german descent.

  4. carola says:

Ohh I didn’t know Antonella was from Argentina, thought she was Dutch.

Tati is amazing, very versatile, sexy yet elegant.

And Tetyana seems like such a cool girl.

  5. gabe says:

  6. Janelle says:

  7. Mango says:

    Tetyana and Antonella…<3

  8. All about Models says:

Dafne will have a brilliant future. She already worked for another very huge magazine in such a short period beside Vogue.
    Tetyana + Carla + Antonella ….Just amazing

You all forgot the first really BIG girl from Argentina, Romina Lanaro! She was the one who started the wave.

  10. Milena says:

What about the blonde Naomi?? She was at Balenciaga precollection this season and walked for Givenchy too. Seems Ricardo Tisci is a big fan of the argentineans!!!
    They are all stunning

  11. Fleur says:

The best is yet to come….

  12. Karo says:

Naomi preizler is also argentinian, she was at givenchy.

  13. gise says:

i’m a fan of the argentines. unique features representing a mix of euro and latin. plus lovely names and accents. good luck, girls!

  14. dominican forever says:

dominican wave. caribbean wave. rose cordero, joan smalls, arlenis sosa…

  15. Davidoff says:

    I ♥ Tetyana Melnychuk!

  16. andrew says:

Argentine girls! The new era of Argentine models, Before Gisele, I think that the first latin american supermodel, was Argentinian, Valeria Mazza, she was big in the 90s. I think she was the first latin american girl for Victoria’s Secret, Guess, and many others, the same Ines Rivero.
Romina Lanaro and Cecilia Mendez are great, too.

  17. paco says:

the first three girls that started the wave were milagros schmoll, romina lanaro and cecilia mendez. they have been working for years and they still do it, and they are great and really gorgeaus.
and now, we have the new wave of amazing girls, they have personality, they are smarts, they have everything.
i think we should watch her very closely.

  18. germaine says:

that´s right, Valeria was gianni versace´s muse and Ines was one of the first VS angels, Yamila Diaz Rahi has been in two ssi covers and Valeria did the cover with Tyra, let´s see what these new girls bring on.

  19. davifranci says:

yep, argintine girls rule the world. i dont think we’ll see american girls dominating the runways any time soon. they are too busy boxing, brewing beer, lifting weights and eating junk food. its just another catagory the usa has shamelessly taken a back seat in.
the s.a. girls might of european decent, but so what. i bet they sell the heck out of the clothes

  20. PAULO GÓIS says:

AARGENTINA NUNCA VAI TER UMAMODELO DO QUILATE DE GISELE BUNDCHEN QUE É A ESTRELA MAIOR NO MUNDO DA MODA. VIVA GISELE BUNDCHEN1

  21. Marcus says:

    team tati

  22. ehstmulleady says:

they are so amazing ….tatis walk is sureal , you forget naoni pretly and romina was great two years ago ….i love argentinian wave

  23. andrew says:

Yeap, Gisele is Gisele, but she wasn’t the first. When Gisele was a little girl, Valeria and Ines were the most important latin american models, and the first ones in VS, Sports Illustrated, etc. I forgot about Daniela Urzi, amazing, too.

  24. g says:

    what about pilar solchaga?

  25. Sham says:

I don’t think they actually represent their country and their origins just as anywhere else’s girls. They are interchangeable and derivative at best, there’s nothing argentinian (argentine?) about them

  26. chris says:

ok, I see my comment has been deleted from here, it was my answer to Paulo´s kind of racial comment but he wrote it in portuguese so I´ll translate it for you so you can remove his comment too. He said: “Argentina WILL NEVER have a model like Gisele Bundchen who is the biggest star of fashion…”
I personally think that nationalities don´t have anything to do with fashion or beauty, every girl deserves an oportunity.

  27. estmulleady says:

definitely … the models are what they are for their beauty and not by place of origin, and in that if Argentina are of European descent., so that in this country that most people are descendants of other countries, but that does not charisma and beauty of the Argentine

  28. Aldana says:

I love them, especially for the fact that I am from Argentina, but don’t forget about Naomi Preizler, she will be huge! I love her.

  29. matthias says:

ANTES QUE GISELE, ESTUVO VALERIA MAZZA, UNA ESTRELLA MUNDIAL DE LA MODA, LA PUBLICIDAD Y LA TELEVISION. FUE EL PRIMER ROSTRO LATINO DE GUESS, PRIMER MODELO LATINA DE VS, PRIMER TAPA LATINA DE SOPRTS ILLUSTRATED (NINGUNA BRAZILEÑA AUN LO FUE), MUSA DE GIANNI VERSACE Y CUANDO GISELE ERA UNA ADOLESCENTE, VALERIA ERA UNA ESTRELLA MUNDIAL. TAMBIEN INS RIVERO, DANIELA URZI Y YAMILA DIAZ RAHI, TODAS ARGENTINAS. AHORA VUELVEN Y ES EL TURNO DE LAS ARGENTINAS EN LAS PASARELAS!

  30. El Chinito says says:

Nowadays, Milagros is working very hard in Argentina and fortunately she started to be popular. Now, she is gorgeous than ever. She looks like a supermodel.

  31. Fleur says:

tetyana is not argentinian!she is from ukraine

  32. crystal says:

  33. Cecilia says:

As if the Argentinians needed more self-esteem, but yes these girls (naomi is the new hit now) are having their moment.
Everyone says it is their strong personality, I agree, they bring passion to cold nordics.
Don’t take it too serious though, argentinian people. we know you like to show off a bit ;)

  34. Cecilia says:
  35. Not on the guest list says:

I know it’s a bit too late to late to comment but as much as I adore the argentinean girls there is no much information about them, I mean, no blogs or something. That’s why I have been looking for someone who can tell the name of the first girl in the following link:
