Joan Smalls.
Michael Thompson.
Elle.

Fashion’s finest adds another major cover to her already impressive resume – check out Joan Smalls on the cover of the new Elle. Given that American Elle is usually reserved for Hollywood starlets and singers it’s big news when a model lands on the front page. As always the versatile Ms. Smalls looks flawless sporting ombre hair and a Givenchy gown on the Thompson helmed cover, but the accompanying interview holds the real surprises. Inside Joan shares her thoughts on fashion’s diversity issue, the forces that propelled her to the top and why she feels acting is the next step in her storied career.

I knew you guys would post this cover! lol She looks amazing, as usual. She’s achieved so much in just 4 years. She’s managed to have the perfect mix of a HF & commercial career, similar to Gisele Bundchen & Isabeli Fontana. I was already impressed by how many HF jobs she has landed, being a US Vogue fave, cover star of VI, campaign queen at Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, Givenchy, etc., but I’m even more impressed that she has booked so many mainstream gigs while still keeping a HF career. Way to go Joanie!

YOU GUYS HAVE TO BUY THIS ISSUE!!! It’s the only way editors will keep putting models on covers. We have to show them that models can sell magazines!

  2. Bertrand says:

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW This is HUGE indeed!!! So glad she made it!!! To be a model and to land the cover of US Elle is big, really big. Keep it up Joan !!!

  3. milex says:

I love her so much but enough with the ombre hair. I’ve done it 2 years ago, time for world to move on

ROBBIE MYERS AT ELLE IS A GENIUS FOR THIS. ANNA WINTOUR TAKE NOTE. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AN AMERICAN VOGUE COVER WITH JOAN, CARA, KATE UPTON & KARLIE TOGETHER.

  8. dangellete says:

Joan and Cara are the new supers if you ask me

  9. LD says:

@Tessa; YESSS, I think it is definitely time for another supermodels cover!!!

But who would make the cut? I definitely think at least Joan, Karlie, Cara. Not sure about Kate though. And of course Liu Wen front and center. But who else???

  10. GP says:

Well deserved. Not a big fan of Elle but I want to get this issue. It’s really hard to get some international fashion magazines in Australia after the biggest book stores “Borders” closed down. Can’t even find American Bazaar lately.

  11. junqi says:

she looks absolutely flawless on the cover. I even forgot to hate the ombre hair. It is actually starting to look great. She IS THE SUPER!

  12. jake says:

  13. kelsey.k says:

This is such a step in the right direction. Joan looks fab!

@LD I think Joan, Cara, Karlie, Liu Wen and Kate Upton would make the vogue cover.

Joan seriously deserves this! She is a modern day Supermodel! Anna Wintour if you are reading this , put her on a US Vogue cover! Bravo Joan! Queen Bee

  20. lainey says:

I think it’s insane that she has so many covers for January 2014! Let’s count…ELLE (US), ELLE (France), Vogue (Germany), Caras (Latin America).

Btw, her Vogue Germany cover by Luigi is my favorite ever.
This girl really is the modern day supermodel @alfonso. She’s breaking some serious barriers, and achieving things that are unheard of for black (or even latina) models.

  21. Jones says:

Joan is having a huge moment right now. Elle US, Elle France, Vogue Spain, and Vogue Germany covers?? She’s on whole different than any other model right now. BRAVO!!!

  22. Alfonso says:

@lainey If people doubted her #1 spot this cements it and takes away any haters! She is so chic and lucrative ! I can’t wait to see what type of campaigns she books for SS14

  23. ketchum says:

    This girl is going places!!
