Funky Divas
August 25th, 2009 Janelle comments (65)i-D always nails it with their covers and the September issue is just as good as you’d expect. Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Arlenis Sosa join forces for a dynamic cover that calls to mind the great girl groups of days gone by while remaining as cool and modern as can be. The quartet gives their best winks to Emma Summerton who shoots them in front of a colorfully graffiti backdrop – can’t wait to see the corresponding editorial!

Is it me or are Chanel Iman’s and Sessilee Lopez’s lips always so stiff and in the same place all the time? It annoys me! But Love Jourdann and Arlenis!

“four amazing african american girls”
NO!
2 African-American girls, 1 British girl & 1 Dominican girl. Sorry, but calling Jourdan & Arlenis “African-American” is insulting! They have nothing to do with America. You’re only African-American if you’re American! Jourdan is British & Arlenis Dominican.
Thankfully in those countries they’re allowed to be just “British” & “Dominican” & there is no need to put “African” in front!

No, there’s not, I love this cover and the girls, but someone always finds something to complain about whenever black models are featured on a cover or editorial. So far it hasn’t happened

that backdrop looks like the wall at the model lounge. i saw sessilee on the model lounge blog yesterday…was she really there this week?! she’s so fierce on the cover. four black girls though. why not a black, asian and white…

OMG I LOVE EVERYONE HERE. BUT EVEN AS BEING A TOKEN BLACK MODEL I DON’T THINK CHANEL IMAN IS ON PAR OR UP TO STANDARD. SHE IS ALWAYS SERVING IT COLD THE SAME OL FACE EVERY SINGLE TIME .. I GUESS COS THESE 4 ARE THE BIGGEST BLACK MODELS NOW. THE OTHER 3, ARLENIS, JOURDAN AND SESILEE ARE EPIC AND TOTALLY BLOWING ME AWAY.

Jourdan and Chanel have the best bone structure of the bunch but Alrenis has a body type that is much more au courant. Hats off to them

Talk about a nice surprise, especially after all the depressing Kate Moss covers. This is now my favorite cover, after Linda’s insane V cover and Lara’s Vogue Paris cover. It’s fun and exciting!

I need to rephrase my last post: This is now my favorite cover followed by Linda’s insane V cover and lara’s Vogue Paris cover.

I just love these girls (<3 Sessilee) but how much excitement will it take for AMERICAN magazines to recognize that putting these girls on their covers not only sells but causes a fashion frenzy??? Hello $$$. No?
One of the things I love is how Britain supports their models and backs them up, I would love to see the same thing happen in America for a change.
August 26th, 2009
at 10:43 am
…and when will the major media run with this and give these girls their props??? This is newsworthy and I would like to see it talked about on TV too!!!
August 26th, 2009
at 10:44 am
Arlenis AND Sessilee are Dominican. They are black AND Latina. Yes, you can be both. Why is this concept so hard to grasp?
“No, there’s not, I love this cover and the girls, but someone always finds something to complain about whenever black models are featured on a cover or editorial. So far it hasn’t happened”
—This is just stupid. People don’t simply complain whenever there’s a black model on a cover or a spread. They complain when said black model is being used to convey insulting stereotypes. That said, this cover is wonderful.

Sessilee:
“Fashion is very black and white. It doesn’t pay attention to heritage much. They don’t see me as a Dominican girl. They just see the color of my skin. It can be hard, because it’s your heritage and you want to be appreciated for it, but it’s just modeling, so I don’t let it get to me.”

I love this! This reminds me why I’m still so fashioned obsessed, for a while eveythings been so boring (speaking of Linda will somebody please shoot her as a sexy older woman , because if stephanie, naomi, cindy, helena even christy can do it, linda sure as hell can, they make her look so old and 41 is not old). I love all these girls I especially lovwe Jourdan and can’t wait for her to have her child and then comeback and mash up the scene.

I agree with Fernando that AMERICA needs to support its models. It’s a disgrace that it’s just the opposite.
But SESSILLEE rocks it for me. She looks like a super hero about to kick some you know what here. Ummm Uhhh!

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!
i am so happy to see this cover, it will def. help me to persue the struggle of pushing black and other ethnicities out there. First italian Vogue and now this, the change is certainly on its way.
Viva la black besauties*:)

Anon, Arlenis is actually an african american model, America is a whole continent, it is divided in North, Central and South America, but all of those divisions are America, of course she was born in Domenican Republic, but this country is part of America. By the way beautiful cover, although I would have included Kinée Diouf.

—You’re equating America with Americas and you’re also talking about geography rather than culture. To call Arlenis an “African-American model” is misleading and negates the fact that she grew up in the Dominican Republic, a country that is an amalgamation of Spanish, African, Haitian, and French cultures and speaks Spanish as her primary language.

I prefer sesssssilee, she’s amazing, andJourdan she’s sp beautiful, and Arlenis she’s very pretty but this picture doesn’t show her o her best, And Chanel Iman, she’s ok, when she started she was young thin and new, now she’s fine.
