Editorial Inspiration: Gloria

April 23rd, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

It is no secret that fashion frequently cribs from cinema for editorial inspiration and in the latest Vogue Paris, Terry Richardson recreates the look and feel of John Cassavetes’ film, Gloria. With Joan Smalls taking on the titular role and Géraldine Saglio styling, the VP version of things is considerably more glamourous, but the story is essentially the same – former mob mistresses becomes accidental guardian of a young boy. On the big screen that means shoot outs and grit and in the pages of Vogue that means playground trips and bright red Valentino gowns.

Both the edit and its inspiration are heavy on early 80s / late 70s chic, but we wouldn’t have minded if Joan went all badass and started taking down mobsters. We know the era of Emmanuelle Alt means that Vogue Paris is kindler and gentler, but with source material this fierce it seems a shame not to take things to the next level.

Love by H&M

April 20th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

H&M offers a kiss for a cause with their latest campaign for Fashion Against Aids. Directed by Dan Martensen and featuring a cast of model couples, the ad is cool, romantic and offers a look at the most important thing there is – love. Of course H&M isn’t just offering lip service – 25% of the purchase price of all Fashion Against Aids items goes towards AIDS Prevention. MDC caught up with the campaign’s casting directors Daniel Peddle & Drew Dasent at Daniel Peddle Casting to find out more about the ad and the process behind the scenes.

MDC: What was the most enjoyable aspect of casting this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: Working with Jenny Friedberg at Creative Chaos on such a positive campaign and meeting such amazingly diverse real couples in love.

MDC: Fashion has always been such a huge support in the fight against AIDS. What other charities or initiatives have caught your eye?

Daniel and Drew: Doctors Without Borders does incredible work, Operation Smile is another favorite of ours which is enjoying a boost from supporters in fashion like Lydia Hearst and J. Lindeberg. We also are big fans of the work of God’s Love We Deliver.

MDC: What do you hope that people will take away after viewing this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: That we really are all the same and love has no boundaries.

The Biz: Roitfeld Inc.

April 20th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Carine Roitfeld by Mario Sorrenti for MAC – this marks the first time Sorrenti has shot for MAC!

Think of this as a Biz meets Beauty Bytes moment – in a move that should please eyeliner afficianados everywhere Carine Roitfeld has teamed with MAC to create a limited edition color collection “with a focus on eyes and brows that reflect Carine’s signature look: smoky eye, bold brows and nude lips.” Sounds brilliant and perfect for the expected Fall 2012 release date, certain to coincide with the launch of Roitfeld’s magazine CR Fashion Book.

LVMH’s Bernard Arnault invests in French label Maxime Simoens – major coup for the relative newcomer and a move that is certain to raise his profile!

Even if you aren’t a blushing bride, there were some interesting trends happening during NY’s Bridal Fashion Week. Vera Wang went for crimson with a round of bright red gowns, Oscar de La Renta also showed red looks, but the highlight of his show were the Spanish influenced gowns topped off with mantilla veils.

Who says fashion editors can’t do it all? British Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman managed to write a novel while editing one of the world’s biggest magazines. We’re impressed!

Can you break up with a label? The New York Times seems to think soElle‘s Anne Slowey details post-pregnancy her breakup with Balenciaga, Junya Watanabe and Comme des Garçons.

Ever wonder how the Calvin Klein brand stays ahead of the curve? Find out in WWD’s lengthy and interesting interview with Tom Murry, president and chief executive officer of Calvin Klein Inc.

mdc ♥s: cool collaborations

April 19th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

We’re loving the latest round up of collaborations from chic designers and ultra-cool brands, take a look at some of our favorite upcoming collabs.

ALTUZARRA + J.CREW, image by Nagi Sakai

When we heard that Altuzarra was pairing up with J.Crew we were expecting to see some of the unbridled energy of his Corto Maltese inspired F/W collection, or maybe a few of those psychedelic prints from Spring / Summer. The absolute last thing we saw coming were striped sweater dresses and espadrilles. We admire Altuzarra for keeping us on our toes, but we can’t help but hope that he’ll be sneaking in a thigh high slit somewhere into the collection.

Any combo that smells as good as this is a-ok with us. The delicious blend of Cattleya orchid, nashi pear, pomegranate and goji berry is downright intoxicating and in true Nest form the candle’s scent is just enough to fill a room without becoming overwhelming. Fans of Wu’s ladylike designs will not be disappointed, this is easily one of the most beautiful candles to make its debut of late; the delicate petals from the S/S 12 Wu show are emblazoned right on the vessel.

Collaboration is about more than just cute designer goods, sometimes it all comes back to helping mother earth. Natural beauty pioneers Neal’s Yard Remedies have teamed up with activist Sam Roddick for the Bee Lovely and Help Save the Bees campaign. For every tube sold Neal’s Yard is making a $1.50 donation to Buglife, Landlife and Pesticide Action Network UK, all of whom are working towards saving the world’s dwindling bee population. Find out why saving the bees is just so important on the Neal’s Yard website.

Every season the team at NARS outdoes themselves backstage at Thakoon, creating a gorgeous look for the designer’s show – just take a look at the amazing crimson lips from F/W to see what we’re talking about. Now NARS & Thakoon are taking their collaboration one step further with a series of limited edition nail polishes that is just plain gorgeous. The vibrant colors with names “inspired by Indian spice markets” are sure to fly off shelves – better put yourself on the waiting list right now!

Amazing patterns, comfortable sneakers – what’s not to love? Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Kenzo have paired up with VANS for a limited edition set of shoes that feature those great net prints from the S/S collection. The first pair comes out in May at select locations – ie. Kenzo shops, Colette, Lane Crawford and of course, Opening Ceremony.

First Look: V’s American Beauties

April 18th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

As perfecters of the themed glossy, V Magazine never fails to choose a winning subject to center its issues around. Their latest edition is all about Summer Americana, a concept that for most people, conjures images of backyard barbecues and July 4th festivities. As blissfully nostalgic as that all sounds, there is another side to it – namely the influence of stylish Americans on the current fashion scene. The designers, the editors and of course the models who have shaped our definition of chic.

This all comes together in Sharif Hamza‘s simple and beautiful pre-fall shoot. Featuring looks from New York’s premier labels, the story covers everything from iconic brands like Calvin KleinRalph Lauren and Marc Jacobs to current it-labels like Altuzarra, all in shades of icy white selected by Tom Van Dorpe. Two generations of American top models wear the pieces perfectly and the whole crew from current sensations Karlie KlossDree HemingwayArizona Muse, to outright legends Carol AltChristie Brinkley and Elaine Irwin, looks phenomenal.

Going for vibrant color akin to the neon illuminations created by artists like Dan Flavin & James Turrell, Rahman piles on the brights going from sexy glossy red lips and purple eyes, an incredible ombre pastel look and finally a literal explosion of pigment across the face.
