Sweet Charity

October 27th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Nothing brings a great cause to light like an imaginative ad that captures the heart of an issue with intelligence and wit. Of course, a few of the world’s most beautiful models stripping down to their skivvies certainly doesn’t hurt either. Cameron Russell, Rianne Ten Haken, Rachel Alexander, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Crystal Renn, Shannan Click, Olya Ivanisevic, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Alla Kostromichova, Nicole Trunfio and Heidi Mount join forces to bring awareness to and the International Day of Climate Awareness via a humorous spot that has the girls peeling off layers due to the heat caused by the rising carbon count. The ad conceived by Cameron herself, is a smart and sexy way to get attention for a great cause. MDC spoke to the always eloquent Cameron for a little insight into why this cause is so important and how the project itself got off the ground.

MDC: There are so many great people involved in this video – how did you organize such a project?

Cameron: All the girls are my friends and loved shooting the video for a good cause, so that part was relatively easy to pull together.

The whole project happened from start to finish in a little under two weeks and 300 phone calls–who knew production was so complicated!

MDC: On a personal level what made you want to get involved with this cause?

Cameron: I think Climate Change is the most important issue of our time. In the history of the world all 5 mass extinctions have been accompanied by massive climate change, so we are facing an incredible serious threat.  In fact we are technically in the 6th mass extinction right now, and it is the first mass extinction being attributed to human kind. My all time hero Tibor Kalman showed the world the ability of mass media to convey serious images and create real discussion (think 90’s Benneton ad’s of people with AIDS). Climate Change which is often seen as very political or scientific needs to be made a people’s issue. My hope is that this ad helps re-brand environmentalism.

The Next Generation

Ross Tanner. Pol and pic courtesy of Next London. (Interview and story by Kristen Bolt)

From a distance Ross Tanner exudes tough guy appeal- tattoos cover his chest and arms, the word swim inked across his knuckles. But underneath the t-shirt, Alice Dellal‘s partner in crime has an unassuming intensity which delivers a boyish charm to his body of work. Coupled with a lanky frame and green eyes, this professional BMX biker comme model has just signed with NEXT London’s new men’s division and is a surefire bet to add street cred to any shoot. MDC spends 90 seconds with the young Brit.

1. How have you seen street art influence fashion and vice versa? Is there a new respect among the fashion community for these forms of once underground means of expression?
With the notoriously hyped Banksy expressing his politics and culture through all cities, fashion was sure to follow with graphic t shirt designs. Since street art has become more of an integral part of youth culture, kids have jumped on these influences and trends.

2. Does being a BMX biker influence the way you move in front of the camera?
No, not at all.

3- What are some things you’ve learned about the fashion industry that you never would have known before?
Money is thrown about in fashion; I never imagined that you could make this type of cash in a day.

Round Two

Who says there isn’t life after modeling! Remember Michelle Ferrara, the striking South African model from the early 00s who made a splash on the runways of Gucci and Fendi? Well she’s back but this time Michelle is behind the lens, shooting editorials for the likes of Vogue and Glamour. This month she captures the luminous Iekeliene Stange for Vogue Spain in an editorial that shows the typically quirky Iekeliene looking elegant and chic in Louis Vuitton’s new collection of sparkling baubles. Check out even more of Michelle’s work at her site.

Boy Oh Boy

October 23rd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Iris Strubegger has the kind of androgynous chic look that would make Annie Lennox green with envy – put Iris in a three piece suit with her hair slicked back and the result is magic, put her in a femme fatale designer gear and you get beauty with an edge. For Hercules, Paola Kudacki and stylist Francesco Sourigues, let Iris play both masculine and feminine roles in an editorial that sizzles. Take note of entrancing newcomer Gerard Alondo as well, with his chiseled body and refined features he provides the perfect compliment to Iris’ unorthodox look.

Graffiti Bridge

October 23rd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

No one does couture like Vogue Paris. While the magazine never fails to provide images worth talking about, their couture extravaganzas are always sights to behold. Especially when they take couture away from its gilded trappings and bring it out into the real world. This month Mario Sorrenti shoots an elegantly coifed Raquel Zimmermann against a background of graffiti and grime. Mixing street art and the expressive scrawlings of artist Kaws with pieces from Dior and Armani Prive is an inspired turn and the playful story captures the excitement of the season perfectly. If you can tear your eyes away from Raquel and the stunning graffiti you’ll notice how truly lovely Emmanuelle Alt‘s ultra feminine styling is.
