Abbey Road

June 30th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

One might expect the pairing of Aussie sexpot, Abbey Lee Kershaw and king of decadence Terry Richardson to produce a steamy end result but the duo’s collaboration for Vogue Nippon manages to be sexy without ever delving into debauchery. The simple black and white pictures of Abbey looking tough in leather and heels showcase George Cortina‘s bad girl styling and provide just a hint of naughtiness. Less is more but we can’t help but miss the sinful ways of Terry’s more in your face work.

Here We Go Again…

June 30th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Old ideas are the new black when it comes to campaigns this season. Seems as though the recession has everyone playing it safe either with a concept we’ve seen before or an idea that feels redundant.

Michael Kors sticks to his guns with the same campaign we’ve seen from him ever season. Carmen Kass, Noah Mills and the perils of international celebrity. Granted, Mario Testino‘s work is always beautiful and both Carmen and Noah are pros but wouldn’t it be nice to see something ever so slightly different? Couldn’t old school Hollywood glamour be represented in a way that doesn’t involve pseudo-paparazzi shots?

For YSL the 90s supermodel by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin theme remains intact but this time around it’s the divine Christy Turlington. As cool as Stefano Pilati’s jet black getups look on the runway they seem a little flat in these pictures. Add to this the fact that poor Christy has to prop up a giant YSL logo frame while thrusting a handbag in our faces and you’ve got the makings of something awkward. Couldn’t they have gotten someone else to hold that thing up? Was there not enough cash in the budget for an able-bodied male model?(Edited to add: apparently he’s coming later; Andres Velencoso Segura will be joining Miss Turlington).

Finally, we have Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld, with darlings Freja Beha and Heidi Mount looking positively sapphic in their “Belle Brummel” hats and gowns. The idea is quite lovely but the drab sepia tones take away from the fact that the best parts of the collection itself were brimming with color and life. At the end of the day it’s all about the clothes…

What do you think about these ads? I’m all ears.

Prairie Home Companions

June 29th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

There is a decidedly outdoorsy feel to two of the season’s latest campaigns – both Chloe and Kenzo take the action off the busy city streets and bring it back to nature. Kasia Struss, Sigrid Agren & Karlie Kloss display the muted beige caftans and thigh high boots of Hannah McGibbon’s Chloe collection in an unlikely prairie locale. The image by Mikael Jansson is beautiful and the concept is interesting but the level of beige borders on overkill. For Kenzo’s colorful Mario Sorrenti helmed endeavor Magdalena Frackowiak, Guinevere Van Seenus & Marcel Castenmiller look like flower children as they lay outside on a boldly patterned throw. Which campaign are you enjoying more?

Lap of Luxury

June 29th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Shalom Harlow is one of modeling’s MVPs and the perennially elegant supermodel looks as good as ever in Vogue Nippon. Camilla Akrans photographs Miss Harlow in a sumptuous hotel room lounging and looking resplendent. The soft toned editorial seems to be cut from the same cloth as Akrans’ earlier Vogue Nippon story with Mariacarla Boscono but Shalom brings her own special appeal to all that she does.

Calvinism

June 29th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Calvin Klein is always on the cutting edge when it comes to model selection and this season is no different. For the F/W campaign the legendary label taps fresh star Will Defiel for an ad that focuses on the simplicity and elegance of dressing.  David Sims shoots Will in crisp black and white while David Bradshaw‘s styling brings out the cool of those sharp suits.

The New Yorkers

June 26th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Ladylike chic is au courant, even for the younger set. Case in point. Nathaniel Goldberg‘s DKNY’s F/W ads featuring 8 lovelies wearing the retro inspired look of the season. Giedre Dukauskaite, Lyndsey Scott, Liu Wen, Alyona Osmanova, Rosie Tupper, Diana Farkhullina, Daiane Conterato and Anna Gushina look like a page out of a 60s Vogue in their top coats and coordinated clutches.
