The 2014 look is elegant, simple and completely fresh – much like Ajak Deng in this great shot by Lachlan Bailey (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists)

2014 began with a bang, but there is still plenty of time to get started on those resolutions. Refresh your lineup with our choices, filled with updated beauty picks and inspiring reads designed to impact you mind, body & soul.

mdc ♥s: the new classics

November 4th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Dree Hemingway clutches an oversized bottle of another of our favorites Love, Chloe in Paola Kudacki‘s gorgeous shot for Vogue Paris

There are millions of scents to choose from every year, but here are a few guaranteed crowd pleasers that merge traditional appeal with innovative formulations for a truly modern mix.

BALENCIAGA L’EAU ROSE – No matter the season Balenciaga remains essential and the line’s signature fragrances are a testament to that fact. The rose tinged L’Eau offers an alluring twist on the classic Balenciaga scent, adding an array of traditionally masculine elements like black pepper, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver into the mix while still remaining feminine & seductive. Crafted by perfumers Olivier Polge and Domitille Bertier, L”Eau Rose offers a spirited and crowd pleasing take on a favorite floral.

TOM FORD PLUM JAPONAIS – You can never go wrong with a touch of Tom Ford and the designer’s latest offering is a very adult take on sweetness. Plum Japonais’ inspiration is the ume plum, an ingredient with a powerful scent and unique acidic properties. The scent itself continues Ford’s exploration of luxury with a heady mix of saffron, cinnamon bark and plum – an intense combination not for the faint of heart, but completely in line with Ford’s daring and sensual aesthetic. As with all the designer’s exclusive Private Blend creations, Plum Japonais is an enticing take on decadence.

BYREDO 1996 – A fragrance whose inception dates back to a classic Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin photo (Kristen 1996)  – it doesn’t get more fashion insider-y than that, but the scent is irresistible even without the chic reference points. Byredo Creative Director merges juniper berries, black pepper, violet, amber and leather into an elegant blend that is every bit as timeless as an Inez & Vinoodh portrait.

ATELIER COLOGNE ROSE ANONYME – One of the most exciting things about rose is the different ways in which it can be interpreted. Atelier delivers a spicy and dark take on the signature flower (in contrast to Balenciaga’s sparkling variety) that is enrapturing and slightly dangerous. Ginger, oud, incense and benzoin combine with Turkish Rose essence for a daring fragrance.

DRIES VAN NOTEN PAR FREDERIC MALLE – When one of the world’s most respected designers collaborates with a premier fragrance house, the end result is always intriguing. Dries van Noten and Frederic Malle pair up for a tour de force fragrance that captures the essence of van Noten’s aesthetic via  sultry combination of sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, saffron and jasmine absolute. The inspiring collaboration is set to be the first of many – Malle intends to create even more scent collabos with fascinating individuals so keep your eyes peeled for the next one.

BOTTEGA VENETA EAU LEGERE – Though it is the lighter, airier counterpart to the label’s eponymous scent, Eau Legere more than stands on its own. Taking traditionally sumptuous materials like musk and oak and tempering them with pink pepper and jasmine makes for an appealingly delicate fragrance with a touch of sophistication. Added bonus – though the scent falls under the women’s category, the crisp mixture’s allure isn’t lost on men.

DIPTYQUE PHILOSYKOS – The fig based classic has been appearing on dressers for years and never seems to go out of style. Adored by men and women alike, Philosykos is designed the capture the essence of a perfect Greek summer, without the need for a ticket to Athens. The combo of fig and white cedar is

NEST WHITE SANDALWOOD – When candle experts NEST stepped into the fragrance game it was cause for excitement and with White Sandalwood they’ve created a warm, enveloping and complex blend of sandalwood, mimosa, acacia blossom and almond that is beautiful from first spray through the drydown.

mdc ♥ : the fashion month survival kit!

October 10th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Fashion month is a rush; running back and forth to shows, traveling to new places, not getting any sleep whatsoever. How do you stay looking calm and chic when every force in the universe is sapping your energy?! Thankfully there are a few goodies – beauty and otherwise, that can help you feel your best even when you’re in a stressful situation. Here are the extras that helped us make it through NYFW and PFW,

CLARINS BEAUTY FLASH BALM – In order to understand why Beauty Flash Balm is an crucial part of any beauty kit you have to experience it for yourself. Try it on the day you’re skin is looking its dullest, drab is and driest and be amazed by the changes you’ll see.

ROYAL APOTHIC HAND CREME – It is easy to forget about taking care of your hands when you’re on the go, but Royal Apothic’s elegant creme makes things a little easier. All you need to do is apply once and you’re blessed with soft, silky hands for hours – a necessity when you’re spending the day shaking hands and swapping business cards.

SKULLCANDY AVIATOR HEADPHONES – Music soothes the savage beast and it makes the disgruntled editor slightly less ornery. Skullcandy’s trendy Aviator style headphones are a gorgeous mix of style and substance – no wonder then that models like Kate Upton, Jessica Stam and Chanel Iman count them as their favorites.

ILLESTEVA SUNGLASSES – Sunglasses are a beauty product – ok not technically, but they do hide a multitude of sins and a beautifully crafted pair like Illesteva’s are a conversation starter. If you were out partying late at Le Bain and simply do not have the time to do an eye mask, put on a pair of Illestevas and you’ll look like a movie star instantly.

TOM FORD BRONZING POWDER – The oversized compact looks chic (Tom Ford’s packaging never fails to impress) and the product itself is just plain good. Our personal favorite shade, Terra has the perfect consistency and provides a touch of subtle bronze to enliven the features and fake a ‘just spent a weekend in St. Tropez‘ glow.

LORAC PRO SHADOW PALETTE – Packing light is key and Lorac’s full set of shadows gives you absolutely everything you need for any look imaginable. A shimmering neutral for day – check, smoky silver for evening – you betcha.

TATCHA FACIAL MIST – Moisturizing hydration in a convenient spray to take with you wherever you go. Perfect for a midday refresher – especially when you need to look your best ASAP.

SKYN ICELAND HYDRA COOL FIRMING EYE GELS – From puffy to perfect in ten minutes, Skyn’s gel patches rejuvenate tired and dried out eyes with a blend of Ginkgo Biloba and Coenzyme Q10. We admit to using these on flights when the recycled air is driving our sensitive eyes crazy.

mdc ♥s: The Scent of Spring

March 31st, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Looking to get into a spring mood – check out Aline Weber in the ultimate floral editorial shot by Liz Collins for the new issue of Numero

VALENTINO VALENTINA – Under the direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli the Valentino label has become one of the most romantic lines in all of fashion. How do you take that spirit of femininity and capture it in a fragrance? Master perfumers, Olivier Cresp and Alberto Morillas created a blend of bergamot, white truffles from Alba, jasmine, orange blossom and tuberose, that practically sparkles. The scent is sweet, flirtatious and resplendently invigorating. Oh and the bottle design is one of the best we’ve seen in years — a true original!

CHLOE L’EAU DE CHLOE – A bracing blast of feminine freshness that also made our list of favorite green scents. The unfussy yet polished looks you see on the Chloe runway, find their counterpart in the citrus chypre created by Michel Almairac – the force behind the super popular original Chloe scent. Where the original wears like fine silk suit, L’Eau is more of a sheer chiffon blouse – lighter than air and laced with sex appeal.

MCMC MAINE – The coasts of North Haven might not be the most exotic locale on the planet, but its the perfect place to fall in love. MCMC’s talented Anne McClain, crafts a scent that is fresh yet enveloping. Bulgarian rose absolute, local clary sage & wild Somalian myrhh combine to create memorable & beautiful moment.

JO MALONE IRIS & LADY MOORE – Is it just us or has the Jo Malone brand gotten a little punk now that Charlotte Stockdale is on board? The London Bloom’s collection boasts a great deal of that signature Stockdale irreverence. We were impressed by the artistic packaging and unexpected scent combinations. Picking a favorite is hard, the Iris & Lady Moore cologne is a compelling mix of iris nobile, vetiver and an oh so on trend geranium note.

TOM FORD SANTAL BLUSH – It is hard to write about a Tom Ford fragrance without using the word sexy and Santal Blush is no exception to the rule. Ford explores the exotic and erotic, with an ode to sandalwood and spice that is light and airy. To quote the man himself, “if it were a color it would be the shade of sunkissed skin.”

VIKTOR & ROLF FLOWERBOMB – The modern classic and perfect spring scent. Bombastic florals, a hint of sweetnes and the oh so Viktor & Rolf playfulness that makes it addictive. Jasmine, Centifolia Rose, Cattleya Orchid, Ballerina Freesia and Patchouli all in a pretty pink grenade.

MAISON FRANCIS KURKDJIAN AQUA UNIVERSALIS FORTE –  As one of the kings of niche fragrance, Francis Kurkdjian’s unorthodox perfumes are works of art. Aqua Universalis Forte is all about the allure of white flowers – jasmine, lily of the valley and Moroccan roses all in one ethereal blend.

ARQUISTE INFANTA EN FLOR – Architect Carlos Huber dips into fragrance with a collection of scents based around important moments in history. Created in honor of “Maria Teresa, the Infanta of Spain, who was offered to Louis XIV in exchange for peace” the orange blossom and leather based blend is a touch of regal grace.

mdc ♥s : current obsessions

January 29th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

We will always be a little obsessed with Daria Werbowy, clearly Vogue Paris seems to share our feelings

THE COFFEE TABLE MUST HAVEWill Cotton: Paintings and Works on Paper The singularly beautiful first retrospective of Cotton’s work will take your breath away. Those eye-catching candy filled paintings of women in various states look as lush as ever. The coffee table keeper from Rizzoli is filled with inspiring and downright decadent imagery.

THE SCENT OF HEAVENNest Blue Garden Diffuser Ever wonder what heaven smells like? Probably a bit like this richly scented hydrangea, hyacinth and forget-me-nots blend that quickly fills the room with an intoxicating aroma. We’ve long been fans of Nest’s elegant offerings (keep your eyes peeled for their collaboration with Jason Wu this Spring) but this might just be our favorite in the entire line.

MODEL WORTHY BEAUTYEstee Lauder Daywear BB Cream The beauty blogosphere has been buzzing about BB creams for awhile now, but when we heard about the one that keeps Constance Jablonski looking flawless we had to try it. With lightweight coverage and a gentle feel the Estee BB falls somewhere between a tinted moisturizer and a foundation. The creamy texture and radiant finish left us thoroughly impressed.

FAST FASHIONKarl for Net-A-Porter Net-a-Porter understands that you can never have too much Karl Lagerfeld in your life. Where Karl goes, fashion follows and the crowds came out in full force for the launch of his eponymous line for NAP. Don’t worry you can still scoop up some things for yourself – who can resist with the affordable prices and impressively versatile designs.

THE JEWELRY STATEMENTManiamania We’ve been in love with all things Maniamania since their short film featuring Abbey Lee Kershaw opened our eyes to their edgy collection of mystically minded baubles. Created by Aussie fashion insiders Tamila Purvis and Melanie Kamsler, the line is filled with pieces that demand attention. We covet the timeless beauty of their smoky quartz ring, The Eternal.

THE MASSAGE MASTERKoh Gen Do Macro Vintage Massage Royal Massage Milk We love products that do double duty- this gem from Japanese line Koh Gen Do can be used as a moisturizer, primer and facial massage cream. Added bonus, it feels like silk on the skin and smells divine.

THE NECKPIECE Givenchy Floral Scarf It might be too early to predict the scarf of the season, but this is a strong candidate. It gives you just hint of the eclectic Tisci look and has yet to become as overexposed as those Rottweiler sweatshirts.

THE ARM CANDY Balenciaga Timepiece Elegant, understated and off-kilter enough to be worthy of the Balenciaga name.

THE KIT & KABOODLEKiehl’s Ultra Facial Kits

As one of the most beloved brands on the market, Kiehl’s represents quality and innovation in all things skincare. Their Ultra-Facial range is beloved by dermatologists, beauty editors and anyone with a healthy appreciation of good skin. The overwhelming popularity of the line has led to the release of two brand new kits – The Ultra-Facial 3 Step & Ultra-Facial Oil Free, that provide an assortment of Kiehl’s goodies designed to cleanse, tone and moisturize all at a fraction of the price.

mdc ♥s : purification

Sasha Pivovarova is always a refreshing sight – Image for Biotherm, full story in the Database

Fashion week is almost here and with it come the long days, the late nights and the meals consisting solely of fried carbohydrates. We can already feel the tension building so what better time to start treating ourselves right with a few skincare helpers, some soothing music and a perfectly scented candle to set the mood. By the time NYFW rolls around you’ll be feeling fresh as a daisy.

The quickest, easiest (and lets face it most cost effective) way to conquer stress is a nice hot shower. Pamper yourself with a frothy soap by THYMES – we’re in love with the refreshing Agave Nectar bar, that is guaranteed to lift your mood. Packed with ruby red grapefruit, lemon blossom, guava and aloe leaf it is downright delicious. The classic Eucalyptus and Bergamot Vert scents are equally lovely, as is the creamy lather and moisturizing properties of the entire line – be sure to try the bubble baths too!

More of a shower gel fan? Don’t worry, MOLTON BROWN has got you covered with a special line just for those in need of R&R. The relaxing Yuan Zhi shower gel  is all about finding your inner calm via vanilla, rose and of course the medicinal senega root aka Yuan Zhi, known for its healing properties and ability to relieve everything from anxiety to insomnia.

Nothing is quicker and more effective than a mask when it comes to restoring skin’s vitality. There are literally hundreds to choose, from but when it comes to rejuvenation we reach for Sisley’s Black Rose Cream Mask. Moisturizing, softening and refreshing, it restores the life to tired, dull skin.

NUDE Skincare’s Deep Cleansing Mask is packed with kaolin clay and exfoliates as it cleanses skin of impurities and excess oil. The fact that it simply feels incredible on the skin doesn’t hurt either.

If your problems tend more towards pesky stress pimples, REN’s Clear Calm Acne Mask boasts an all natural remedy to those persistent breakouts. Absorbing sebum and attacking the bacteria behind breakouts without resorting to harsh chemicals.

You’re busy, you’re on the go, you want something that is portable, manageable and best of all works. Algenist’s Regenerative Anti-Aging set is a small wonder. Filled with everything you’ll need – a cleanser, a serum and ultra-rich moisturizer all based around Alguronic acid, a compound that increases elastin synthesis and cellular regeneration. We had women of different ages (25, 47 and 59 to be exact) test drive the line and each reported that their skin looked smoother, clearer and considerably fresher.

Put on some music, light a candle, meditate and try to forget the outside world. Put on some AIR, maybe a little lo-fi Lana Del Rey for good measure and just relax. Our latest candle obsessions come from Astier De Villatte, a French brand with scents meant to evoke the feeling of travel. Each candle is a destination and from the moment you light one up, you’re transported to an exotic new place, minus the tourists, airline fees and jetlag. The effervescent and citrusy Broadway is a breath of fresh air, while Alger boasts wild jasmine, bitter orange and just a hint of chilli – truly thrilling to the senses. Added bonus the handmade ceramic cases and toppers will be gorgeous long after the candle is finished.

mdc ♥’s : beauty to go!

September 26th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Gemma Ward and Lily Donaldson always travel in style | Photo by Emma Summerton for Vogue Italia, May 2008

With fashion month in full swing it feels like everyone is headed somewhere. Even if you weren’t jetting off to Milan to catch last week’s Prada show, it is still good to know what beauty essentials you ought to be toting with you – you never know when those to die for invites are going to come in the mail. As such here are a few of our beauty favorites for you international jet setters.

Clarisonic MIA – Don’t leave home without it, the best skincare brush in a pocket size that makes it perfect for trips. With only one speed (the original Clarisonic has three) it is even easier to use and works just as well when it comes to exfoliating and cleansing.

Malin & Goetz Detox Face Mask – Planning on spending late nights out at those fashion week parties? Who can resist the temptation. Think of Malin & Goetz’s mask as a detox plan for your face, the lightweight foam is packed with complex amino acids and natural almond extract to soothe the skin and provide gentle cleansing.

Bobbi Brown Tortoise Shell Eyeshadow Palettes – Every single eyeshadow you will need in a perfectly portable case. With this you can create everything from an “I just rolled out of bed looking this fabulous” neutral look to the coveted perfect smoky eye. Bobbi offers two different palettes depending on your skintone, but we found both worked fabulously. Keep in mind that this is a limited edition item, so be sure to get yours before they run out!

Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation – If it is good enough for the girls of Chanel couture, it is good enough for us. 10 hours worth of coverage in one tiny bottle.

Illamasqua Volume Mascara Alex Box‘s Illamasqua line is filled with unique products and one of our favorites is her volumizing mascara. One coat and you look completely done.

NUDE Skincare Hydrating Water – The instant solution to the horrific dryness you’ll find in most airplane cabins. One spritz and you’re good.

Estee Lauder Cooling Eye Illuminator – A handy little gem that we go back to again and again, because it just works. If you haven’t gotten eight hours of sleep, or just suffer from puffy eyes this solves the problem in an instant.

iPad 2 – Granted, the iPad is not necessarily a beauty must have, but there is no better way to bring all your magazines, books, movies and other sources of fashion inspiration with you on the road. Want to read the latest Vogue Italia on the plane? It is right there with a click of a button.
