Upstart British menswear magazine HERO Magazine has always had a knack for going big, and their latest issue is no different, with rising star Ansel Elgort on the cover. Inside, a powerful thirty-page feature offers a fictional take on cult life, photographed by Sebastian Kim (Management + Artists) in lush, documentary-style black and white. “What I wanted to achieve was almost documentary stills,” says fashion editor Gro Curtis, “like Sebastian is a photographer for LIFE in the Seventies visiting this strange commune upstate.” The contemplative images in “Father” capture both action and solitude, with a hint of menace, pulling inspiration from the story of Jonestown and attitude from the languorous young adults of Martha Marcy May Marlene. The young acolytes, (casting by Douglas Perrett) played by Gustav Morstad, Marshall Brockley, Ryan James, AJ Mason, Cashel Barnett, and Daniel Caban, are dressed simply by Curtis, in keeping with a concept that is more about art than fashion. “Narration is what I believe in, and Sebastian joined in so strongly with this concept,” Curtis explains. “It is dark and strange and sinister and perhaps funny in one moment, but it looks real. It doesn’t look like a fashion story. That’s what we tried to achieve.” Take a look at our exclusive preview below.
